Vinayagar Chadurthi, also known as Ganesha Chadurthi, is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvathi, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth to all of his devotees.

Legends say that Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvathi, wife of Lord Shiva.  Parvathi created Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste and breathed life into him. While she was on her Tapas (Meditation), she asked Ganesha to stand guard at the entrance of the house. Lord Shiva happened to come there and as Ganesha do not know him, he didn’t allow Lord Shiva to enter the house. As a result, Lord Shiva got angry and severed the head of Ganesha and entered the house. But after realizing that he beheaded his own son (Manasa Putra), Lord Shiva fixed the head of an elephant on Ganesha. In this way, Lord Ganesha acquired the name of elephant-headed God.  It is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is widely worshiped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

Vinayagar Chadurthi occurs during the month of August / September (Tamil calendar month of Aavani) growing moon period and is celebrated with pomp and splendor in India. During this festival large decorated idols of Lord Vinayagar are drowned in the rivers and lakes to mark the occasion. This festival is also being celebrated across the globe where Indians live. On this day, devotees visit Vinayagar Temples, recite holy songs and offer Milk and Modhagam to him. They also conduct prayers at home with a small Vinayagar idol made up of clay.

In Singapore, Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple celebrates Vinayagar Chadurthi with Ganapathy Homam in the morning and Ganesha procession (within the temple premises) in the evening. Activities that will take place on this day at LSV temple, 73, Keong Saik Road, are listed below:-
