Frequently Asked Questions and their answers

Please note that the below Frequently Asked Questions are prepared to help Devotees and Tourists to understand more on the temple and its function. The temple has all the rights to amend the FAQ’s and impose new rules and regulations as on when it is needed and without notice to anyone.

General FAQ’s

1.What is the Worshipping Hours?
Between 8.00 AM to 12.00 noon and 5.30 PM to 8.30 PM in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple (Chettiars’ Temple).
Between 7.30 AM to 12.00 noon and 5.30 PM to 8.30 PM in Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple.
Take note that on Special Days and Ocassions like monthly Karthigai, fortnightly Pradosham, yearly Navarathri and ThaiPusam etc., the sanctum opening hours might differ.

2.Do we need to pay for a prayer?
There is no fee to offer a prayer. Those who are interested in getting a Fruit or Coconut Archanai (chanting of Manthra in your name), please get a ticket from the temple office by paying small sum of either 50 C or 1 $.

3.Can we break coconuts?
Coconuts can be purchased from the temple and devotees can break the coconuts in the box kept in front of the temple entrance tower. Strictly no breaking of coconuts inside the temple or near the sanctum.

4. Can we bring our own Deepam (lamp)?
Yes. You can bring your own Deepam and light up in the temple premises. But it is advisable to buy Deepam package(s) from the temple office and offer.

5. Can I offer flowers for Poojas?
Yes. You can bring flowers from outside. Temple does not sell flowers.

6. Can I make pragarams (circle around the sanctum) with in the temple premises?
Yes. You can do this as you wish and can get the counters from the temple office and return it back after your prayer. You have to pay a deposit of S$ 10 which will be refunded upon returning of the counter.

7. Can I meditate inside the temple?
Yes. You can meditate within the free space of temple premises.

8. Can I pay by NETS or Credit Card?
No. All payments has to be made by Cash only (Singapore currency). For donations of substantial amount, cheques are accepted.

FAQ’s for Tourists

9. Can anyone enter the temple?
Yes, People of any race and religion can enter the temple. But no one should enter the main Sanctum Sanctorum except the Priests.

10. Can anyone make a prayer?
A devotee who has the faith in Hinduism can offer his/her prayer.

11. Do we need to pay to enter the temple?
No entrance fee is applicable

12. Should I remove my Footwear before entering the temple?
Yes. You have to remove your footwear before entering the temple’s main tower. But you are allowed to wear socks.

13. Is there any restriction in dressing Code?
Indian Sarees, Dhoties, Pant, Shirt, T-Shirt and Skirts are allowed. Mini Skirts and Sexy Dress code is not permitted and generally to be avoided. Smoking is NOT ALLOWED within the vicinity of temple at all times.

14. Is photography allowed?
Yes. But without touching deities and statues. Modest behavior is very important and funny posing is strictly not allowed.

15. How to make donations?
Donations are accepted, please request for a receipt, when donations are handed to the administrative staff. Alternatively you can deposit in the donation box kept within the temple.

FAQ’s on Services and Facilities

16. Does your temple perform tonsuring (Head Shaving)?
Yes, only at Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on every Sunday between 8.00 AM to 11.30 AM and on during Monthly Karthigais. (Call Temple Office to confirm appointment). During the Thaipusam Festival that falls in the beginning of every year, special arrangements are made for mass tonsuring (Head Shaving). This special tonsuring period will start approximately 10 days before the Thaipusam and ends on Thaipusam day. During this period tonsuring will be done between 7.00AM to 11.30 AM and 4.00PM to 7.00PM. On the Thaipusam day Head shaving will be done only for Children. More information on Thaipusam will be available in early January.

17. What types of Archanais are allowed?
Archanai(chanting Manthra) in devotees name or in Deities name in both temples.
Sahasranama Archanai in both temples.
Shanmuga Archanai for Lord Sri Thendayuthapani in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.
Skanda Homam for Lord Sri Thendayuthapani in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.
Letcharchanai for Lord Sri Thendayuthapani during Skantha Sashti in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.
Letcharchanai for Lordess Meenakshi Amman in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.
Letcharchanai for Lordess Durgai Amman in Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.
Ganapathi Homam for Lord Sri Vinayagar(Ganesh) in Arulmigu Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple.

18. I have bought a new Car? Can I offer prayer?
Yes. You can bring your car to the temple and offer prayer. A fee has to be paid to the temple and you can contact temple office for more information.

19. Does your temple offer Ear piercing for children?
No. We do not do Ear piercing.

20. Can we rent your Marriage Hall for other functions?
Yes. It can be rented for Marriage and other functions like Oratory and Cultural programmes (subjected to temple approval).

21. What additional benefits do we get when we book your marriage hall for a marriage function?
You will be provided with the temple musicians and a Chief Priest to solemnize the marriage. You also can use the vacant space below the Marriage Hall to serve food. Food of your choice has to be catered from outside. Please take note that Non-Vegetarian Food and Alcohol is not permitted within the temple premises.

22. How I can book your Marriage Hall?
You need to call in person at the temple office and pay a deposit & get a receipt from the administrative staff.

23. Do you conduct any Religious Courses?
Yes. Every weekend we conduct Thevaram Classes and it is free of cost. Those who are interested can meet the Temple Odhuvar (Thevaram Teacher) in person and enroll yourselves. Those who can speak Tamil language fluently and above 6 years are welcome to join.
